What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crown is the process of covering tooth that are broken due to caries or trauma, or tooth that have excessive material loss due to any other reason, or tooth that have had root canal treatment. In the figure on the side, the application of dental crown to the tooth is shown. Dental crowns can be made of porcelain or zirconium. They are called zirconium teeth or porcelain teeth according to the material they are made of.

Porcelain and zirconium are ideal materials for capturing the light transmittance of natural teeth and making more aesthetic teeth. Porcelain and zirconium are crown materials that best mimic the color of the patient’s existing natural teeth.

Dental crown is a a dental restoration that surrounds the tooth from all sides, fully conforming to the damaged tooth underneath. Crowns (tooth veneers), as shown in the figure below, can be applied to more than one tooth.

What is Zirconium Tooth (Zirconium supported porcelain tooth)?

Zirconium supported porcelain veneers are prostheses that use zirconium alloy, which has a white color instead of metal, as a substructure. The tooth on which zirconium supported porcelain crowns are made is called zirconium tooth. Porcelains with zirconium substructure are preferred safely because they are aesthetic enough to be used on anterior teeth and because they are robust enough to be used on posterior teeth.

What are the advantages of zirconium supported porcelain dental crowns?

Zirconium dental crowns,
1- have an aesthetic appearance very close to natural teeth, as they reflect light.
2- Since white colored alloy is used as the substructure, no dark lines are formed at the gingival level, so it is much more aesthetic than metal-supported dental crowns.
3- It is 100% compatible with the human body. Does not have an allergic reaction.
4- Zirconium is very strong mechanically.
5- Since it does not contain metal, it does not cause any taste changes and does not cause odor.
6- It does not cause plaque accumulation due to its smooth and slippery porcelain surface.

In Which Cases Is Porcelain and Zirconium Crown Prosthesis Applied?

1- Restoration of a large filled tooth without adequate dental support,
2- Closing the gaps between teeth,
3- Correcting the shape of deformed teeth,
4- To prevent breakage of weak teeth,
5- As the upper structure of dental implants,
6- For the transformation of the color of the teeth with color problems into a more aesthetic appearance,
7- In the correction of teeth that are decayed, broken, traumatized or have excessive material loss for any reason.

Dental crown construction stages

The following figure shows the stages of making the tooth suitable for a dental crown and attaching the dental crown.

The stages of crown construction are as follows [1];
1- First of all, the tooth is made suitable for making crowns. In this context, the tooth is reduced. (Figures A, B and C above).
2- The teeth are measured.
3- Temporary dental crown is manufactured. The temporary dental crown is made on the day the measurement is taken in order to protect the patient’s reduced teeth, if possible, and is temporarily adhered to the reduced teeth.
4- After the permanent crown is produced in the laboratory, the crown is adhered to the reduced teeth with special adhesive (Figures C and D above).
