What is Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)? Purpose, Benefits

In case of inflammation of the veins and nerves under the layers of the teeth for any reason, the treatment that should be done is called root canal treatment (endodontics) . It is the process of removing the nerves of the tooth, sterilizing its canals and filling it with a canal filling material. We perform root canal treatments in our dental clinic in Gebze.

The purpose of root canal treatment is to clean all parts of the teeth with germs, which may be lost due to caries, to keep them in the mouth for a long time, and to prevent further treatments that will force you both financially and morally that may occur due to tooth loss.

Anatomical structure of the tooth

If the living tissue or pulp (pulp = vessel and nerve bundle) in the root canals of the tooth is inflamed or cannot maintain its vitality, root canal treatment is required.

Damaged teeth used to be extracted immediately because they could not be saved 50-100 years ago. However, thanks to the root canal treatment, even when these teeth die biologically, you can clean the inside of them so that they do not disturb the other teeth, and by filling them again, you can regain their usability and prevent a missing tooth in your mouth.

“The aim of root canal treatment is to clean, treat and restore all infected and germ parts due to caries, and to keep the tooth in the mouth for a long time.
Thus, by preventing tooth loss, further treatments that are financially and morally demanding are prevented.” [1]

Stages of Root Canal Treatment:

Kanal Tedavisi - Endodonti
Stages of Root Canal Treatment

The stages of Root Canal Treatment are briefly as follows;

  1. First of all, the tooth is anesthetized for a painless and painless treatment.
  2. When the caries is cleaned and the essence of the tooth is reached, the diseased and soft tissue is removed using special canal files, and the nerve and tissue residues are cleaned.
  3. The tooth canal is expanded and shaped up to the root tip, and the canal is washed with appropriate solutions, thus keeping the canal sterile.
  4. Healing is expected by placing medication in the canal, if there is an improvement in the tooth in the next session, the canal is filled with canal filling materials.

Will there be pain during and after root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a procedure performed under anesthesia. During the treatment, the patient does not feel pain. However, sometimes a slight pain is felt when first contacting the pulp, although anesthesia is given during the application. This situation can be overcome with additional anesthesia into the pulp.

Between root canal treatment sessions and after the end of the treatment, since the living parts of the tooth are torn off, minor pain may be felt for a few days due to the small wound formed at the root tip. And during this sensitive period, when chewing pressure comes on the tooth, there may be pain. Within a week following the treatment, these complaints gradually decrease and disappear.

What should I do if my pain does not go away after root canal treatment?

If you still have pain in the future, the root canal filling may be incomplete or insufficient.

Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics) Symptoms and Diagnosis

Patients who need root canal treatment usually experience sudden and severe pain that starts without any external factors. Especially at night, the pain that awakens from sleep is an important symptom of inflammation of the pulp of the tooth (vessel and nerve bundle).

In very deep caries where the patient does not feel pain, the tooth is dead and there is lesion formation at the root end of the tooth. The diagnosis of such cases is made by the dentist as a result of facial swelling or X-ray of the relevant area.

There is a misconception that the tooth that causes swelling on the face should be removed after the swelling goes down. Even the tooth in this condition can be saved by performing root canal treatment (endodontics) and can serve you for years like other healthy teeth.

Root canal treatment is usually performed in 2 sessions. In some cases, it may be 3-4 sessions. In some cases (such as the patient’s going abroad), it can be done in a single session. [1]
